The day began with weigh-in at 9.30am, and the lifting at 11. Oxford fielded 8 lifters, and Cambridge 11. Also present were Nathan, Armin (Arash's brother), B-Rex and J-Bear. Adam Sandel was not able to make it this year, so Ben Cagan took his place as he was the next best member from squad tryouts.

As there were 19 lifters, the refs split us into two flights, in order of opening squat. This is also where the first sign of our awesome club shone through, as the first flight was made up entirely of Cambridge lifters (I believe that their president opted to switch to this flight even though his squat opener wasn't as low as the others) and all the Oxford lifters were in the second, along with 2 Cambridge lifters. This meant we were off to a good start and the warm-ups hadn't even begun!

The final lifts by all are shown in the results above but I shall highlight some of the new squat records to go up on the board:
Dan Koffler's 500lb (227.5kg) raw squat at 83.5 bodyweight.
Scotty Mac's 190kg beastly squat at 80.1 bodyweight.
T-Dawg's (well below potential!) 190kg “warm-up” weight.
Rob Pearce's 185kg good-morning squat.
Karl’s 180kg squat at 63.7 bodyweight.

Bench press:
With two qualified refs there and despite the relative inexperience of the Cambridge crew, the centre judge decided to give his own interpretation on the “press” command,  duly renamed the “wait at the bottom for a few seconds” command! I jest of course, but it was on the strict side with a solid one-thousand-one count in most cases.
New records included Luke and Dan hitting 155kg, and T-dawg's powerful 137.5kg 3rd lift.

Deadlift:
With victory all but confirmed, the deadlifts were a matter of setting PRs and individuals placing as high as possible, with Dan looking good for 1st and Luke, Karl and Scott jostling for the next few places with Cambridge’s Jerrell Whitehead.
We saw new PRs for the records board from Arash (with 500lbs / 227.5kg) and Scott with 235kg.

Dan knew that if he pulled his 240kg opener, he’d be sat on a pretty much untouchable wilks score of 414. However, disaster struck and he tore his left bicep during the pull. Amazingly he still completed the lift, but missed the down command and it was all for nothing. To the shock of all he insisted on having another go. Despite me trying to convince him he was crazy, Nathan and our team doctor (Arash) strapped his elbow up and he easily pulled the weight off the floor even faster than the first time. After that, he was brought ice and rushed off to A&E, with victory virtually in the bag.
Luke then needed a huge 320kg to win the match on wilks, and went for it. He had previously pulled 290kg pretty easily and clearly had 300 or more in the tank, and so forewent a PR on the day in the chase for victory. He managed to get it moving but it was a little too much for him on the day. It was obvious his deadlift has gone up considerably, even if his second attempt wasn't a PR.

The final top three were Dan Koffler, Luke Pike and Karl Seddon with a the final scores coming out as:

Oxford 1203.1
Cambridge 995.5

There are a lot of statistics than can be quoted (such as all 8 of our lifters ending in the top 10 or our top 3 lifters being top 3 from both teams) but in the end you need only look at the colour distribution on the results (above) to give you a feel for the OUPLC domination.

Cambridge put on a great competition and we were all pleased with the facility and calibre of judging; big kudos to them for turning up on the day against such an intimidating and vastly more experienced powerlifting team.

Thanks to Gareth for organising the accommodation, travel arrangements, photography, twitter-feed, scoring and looking sexy on the day (as always). Thanks to Jake for scoring, loading, encouragement, attempt advice and looking sexy as always.
Thanks to Big Nate Dawg for being up at the lift platform with all our members giving advice, encouragement and loading bars during the warm-up; he’s a great new addition to our powerlifting brotherhood.
You can view the video above; thanks to Armin for capturing the footage and Gareth for supplying the camera and sorting out the clips.

To all those looking forward to their first competition, remember, you're not a powerlifter until you step on the platform!

I hope to see plenty of people at Cuppers this coming weekend (Saturday, 6th March).

Varsity 2009 - Oxford

In short, it was a great day for all involved!

This really was a phenomenal performance.  Dan Koffler hit a huge 376 wilks, just missing a big 270 pull.  Daniele Selmi was on fire yesterday, making his third deadlift of 270 look like an opener, while putting up solid squats and benches.  Robin trailed by a mere 0.7 point, hitting a big 525 total at 75kg, with a particuarly big squat of 177.5kg, approaching 3xbwt now.

Big Karl Seddon hit some solid numbers across the board, with a big 160 squat and 95 bench, as well as a 200 pull giving him a wilks score of 373.6.  Scott (the Red Baron) McLaughlan impressed everyone with a big 225 pull and 132 bench.  Matt Jones had an all-around solid day, making every lift look like an opener.  In particuarly, putting up a massive 240 dead lift and 142 bench, as well as a 200 squat.

Tristan (T-Dawg) Gray-Davies was an animal yesterday, slamming through a 180-/125/220 for easy PRs across the board.  Rob Pearce had a great day also, slamming through a particuarly nice 240 dead lift at 85kg bwt.

And last, but certainly not least, Adam ("no-pec") Sandel gave his all even though he wasn't able to bench press!

The final scores were:

OUPLC 1147.38 WPTS
CUPLC 1108.00 WPTS

Attempts were well-chosen and little weight was left on the platform.  CUPLC fielded a solid team, and the food and drinks afterwards were jovial and enjoyed by all.

In particular, I want to thank Charlie and Alasdair for managing the OUPLC team, and Tiffany and Jacob for running the meet so well.  Thank you Kate for running the camera, and Evren, Juan, Arash, David, and Simon for spotting and loading.  (If I've missed anyone, please accept my apology).

This meet came together very well, despite last-minute changes in the venue and scrambling to get equipment.  We put off a professional meet, which I think equals or betters any IPF or BDFPA meet at the local or regional level that I've seen.  Next year, we'll make this thing official with IPF sanctioning and really push things up a notch.

OUPLC has come a long way in the last year.  We've come from a smattering of guys who casually work out to a highly cohesive unit of National-caliber powerlifters.  This year, we've gone to BUCS/BUSA and smashed the competition.  After a near loss at the Oxbridge Varsity match last year, we've come back to dominate Cambridge.  We have a number of squad and club lifters who are attending the IPF/BDFPA nationals this year, some of whom may even go to the IPF or BDFPA worlds.  As a club and a team, we have come together at meets.  Smacking each other, cheering for each other, roaring with emotion as one solid group.

Now, before we get too proud of ourselves, let's get to back to it.  We've got some serious lifting to do between now and the Nationals.

Update: video of the Oxford team has been uploaded.

The unequipped powerlifting varsity is now over, and Oxford were left beaten but not defeated.

Despite having formed only nine months ago, it was impressive to see the new OUPLC compete so competitively against a such a well established club. Next year, it will be interesting to see the levels Oxford and Cambridge teams can achieve in powerlifting.

Oxford's Luke Pike crowned first place with a monstrous deadlift of 282.5kg, 215kg squat and 145kg bench press, beating Dave Chapman with equally impressive total of 595kg by one Wilks point.

Third place was taken by Ethan Eade, who benched a massive 165kg and closely followed by OUPLC club's president Daniele Selmi with a stunning 250kg deadlift, and a total of 517.5kg, who fell just short of the third place by 3 Wilks. He will be remembered most vividly from his dazzling display of pre-lift psych-up routine.

Cambridge came back with Andrew Lee to take the fifth place. His squat was an formidable 205kg.

Matt Llewlyn-Jones took sixth place, totalling 522.5kg despite having had his finals just the day before. Hopefully Matty will unleash his full fury in the next Varsity match.

Tom James then took seventh place with a solid 210kg pull and Evren Cubkgil came eighth with good sets of 140kg squat, 110kg bench and 170kg deadlift.

For non-scoring athletes, Christ Adler took the top spot by benching an impressive 125kg, and totalling 455kg overall. Alexander Forte followed closely with a 180kg squat and 215kg pull. Dan Adler, who had a hip injury on the day, obtained a delicious 135kg bench press.

The level of performance this year was frankly astounding for both teams. We would like to thank Cambridge for hosting the Varsity this year, especially the Cambridge captain Andrew Lee organising the event. We also like to thank Sam Hazbun our team manager for being the man and legend that you are. It will be hard to beat the level of professionalism in the coming Varsity match in Oxford.

Until then, we will get stronger.
